Wisdom Teeth Removal

Wisdom Teeth Removal

Wisdom teeth, or third molars, usually begin to come in during the teenage years. Because there is often not enough room in the jaw to accommodate a third set of molars, wisdom teeth often create dental problems for patients.  If there is not enough room behind the second molars for the teeth to erupt, they remain trapped beneath bone and tissue, or impacted. Impacted wisdom teeth and partially impacted wisdom teeth can become abscessed, infected and painful. They can also cause damage and decay in adjacent teeth.  In some cases, cysts and bone destruction can occur.

Tooth Decay in erupted wisdom teeth

Dental caries, or tooth decay is the most common problem associated with erupted wisdom teeth. These teeth are located out of easy reach for brushing and flossing; and since they are so difficult to keep clean, they often decay or contribute to decay of adjacent teeth. Removal of wisdom teeth makes dental hygiene more manageable and aids in the maintenance of healthy gum tissue, reducing the risk of periodontal disease.

Symptoms of impacted or erupted wisdom teeth:

  • Wisdom Tooth pain and swelling
  • Toothache
  • Headache
  • Jaw pain
  • Dental crowding
  • Infection and abscess

Wisdom Tooth Removal Procedure

Following a thorough examination, the dentists at Virginia Family Dental will determine whether there is any disease present in your third molars and provide a diagnosis and plan for treatment if you need it. Some problems with wisdom teeth are only visible on an x-ray and problems can exist without any wisdom tooth pain or symptoms. The doctor may recommend a wisdom tooth removal procedure.
